Rutland City Firefighters battled a fully engulfed blaze at 63 Forest St. in Rutland beginning just before 11 p.m. Monday and ending around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Arson investigators are working on that right now,” said Detective Cpl. John Dickerson of the Rutland City Police Department on Tuesday at the scene.
He added that the house was in the remodeling phase and electricity was turned on to only the bottom level through temporary wiring.
Lt. Robert Miles of the Rutland City Fire Department said seven firefighters initially responded to the scene, followed by at least 20 more, all from Rutland City.
“Everybody got released around 4:30 a.m,” he said. “There hasn’t been much sleep yet.”
Dickerson said officials should know more on how the fire started later today.
As of right now he said, “I have no idea and I don’t want to speculate. These guys are trying to figure out what exactly happened.”
The owner of the property, according to the city assessor’s office, is Bank of America.
